Ympäristövaikutus is the Finnish term for the environmental impact of a project or activity. It refers to the changes that human actions cause in natural and built environments, including effects on air and water quality, soil, biodiversity, climate, landscapes, cultural heritage, and human health. The concept covers direct and indirect, as well as short-term and long-term, positive and negative effects.

Assessment of environmental impacts is a formal process used in Finland and the European Union to identify, predict, and evaluate potential effects before a project proceeds. The Finnish practice is commonly referred to as Ympäristövaikutusten arviointi (YVA). The process typically includes scoping, baseline data collection, impact prediction and evaluation, consideration of alternatives, planning of mitigation and monitoring measures, and opportunities for public consultation.

Methods used in the field include environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA), which provide frameworks for evaluating effects at different scales. For product and process choices, life cycle assessment (LCA) can inform environmental performance over a project’s life cycle. Data quality, modeling assumptions, and stakeholder participation influence the reliability of assessments.

Significance lies in informing authorities, developers, and communities so that decisions can avoid or minimize harm and promote sustainable development. Common subjects of YVA include infrastructure projects (roads, railways, airports), energy facilities (power plants, wind farms), mining, and large-scale urban development. Limitations of the process include data gaps, uncertainty, and the need for effective follow-up monitoring.
