Yläsparietaalinen, often translated as "superior parietal" in English, refers to a region within the parietal lobe of the brain. The parietal lobe itself is one of the four major lobes of the cerebral cortex and plays a crucial role in processing sensory information, including touch, temperature, pain, and pressure. It also contributes to spatial awareness, navigation, and integrating sensory input to form a cohesive understanding of the environment.

The superior parietal lobule is the upper part of the parietal lobe. It is situated behind the postcentral gyrus, which is the primary somatosensory cortex, and superior to the inferior parietal lobule. This area is heavily involved in visuospatial processing, which includes tasks like judging distances, understanding shapes, and coordinating movements in relation to objects in space. It also plays a role in proprioception, the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. Damage to the superior parietal lobule can lead to difficulties with spatial orientation, such as dressing apraxia (difficulty with dressing oneself) or constructional apraxia (difficulty drawing or assembling objects). It is a key component in our ability to interact effectively with our surroundings.
