Ylijännitesuojat, known in English as surge protectors or surge suppressors, are devices designed to protect electrical equipment from voltage spikes. These spikes, also called transients, can occur due to various reasons, including lightning strikes, power outages, and the switching of high-power electrical devices. Even brief, high-voltage surges can damage sensitive electronic components within appliances, computers, and other electrical systems, leading to malfunction or complete failure.

The primary function of a ylijännitesuoja is to divert excess voltage away from the protected equipment. Most surge protectors achieve this by using metal oxide varistors (MOVs) or other voltage-sensitive components. When the voltage across the device exceeds a certain threshold, the MOV's resistance drops significantly, creating a low-resistance path for the surge current to flow to the ground. This effectively shunts the damaging surge away from the connected devices.

The effectiveness of a surge protector is often rated by its joule rating, which indicates how much energy it can absorb before failing. Higher joule ratings generally mean better protection. It is important to note that surge protectors do not prevent all types of electrical damage and are not a substitute for proper grounding. They offer a crucial layer of defense against transient overvoltages, extending the lifespan and reliability of electronic devices.
