Yhdistelmäpuolijohteet, known in English as compound semiconductors, are materials made from two or more elements, typically from groups III and V of the periodic table, or groups II and VI. Unlike elemental semiconductors like silicon (Si) or germanium (Ge), compound semiconductors possess unique electronic and optical properties that make them suitable for specialized applications.

The most common class of compound semiconductors are III-V materials, such as gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium phosphide (GaP), and indium phosphide (InP). These materials exhibit higher electron mobility compared to silicon, enabling faster switching speeds and higher operating frequencies. This characteristic makes them ideal for high-frequency electronics, including those used in telecommunications, radar systems, and satellite communication.

Another important group are II-VI compound semiconductors, such as cadmium telluride (CdTe) and zinc selenide (ZnSe). These materials are often used in optoelectronic devices, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes, due to their direct bandgap nature, which allows for efficient light emission. They also find applications in solar cells and photodetectors.

The ability to engineer the properties of compound semiconductors by varying their composition and doping allows for the creation of devices with tailored performance. This tunability is crucial for developing advanced electronic and optoelectronic components that push the boundaries of current technology. While often more expensive and complex to process than silicon, the unique advantages offered by compound semiconductors ensure their continued importance in niche and high-performance applications.
