Yhdistelmäkaasulämmitys, often referred to as a combi-boiler in English, is a type of domestic heating appliance that provides both central heating and domestic hot water from a single unit. This system is characterized by its compact size and efficiency, as it heats water on demand for both purposes. Unlike traditional systems that require separate boilers and hot water cylinders, a combi-boiler eliminates the need for a storage tank.

The operation of a combi-boiler involves drawing cold water from the mains supply, heating it rapidly as it passes through an internal heat exchanger, and then distributing it to either the central heating system or directly to the hot water taps. When a hot water tap is opened, the boiler senses the flow and ignites the burner to heat the water. Similarly, when the central heating thermostat calls for heat, the boiler circulates hot water through the radiators.

Combi-boilers are popular for their space-saving design and energy efficiency. By heating water only when needed, they can reduce energy waste compared to systems that maintain a large volume of hot water in a tank. Installation is generally simpler and quicker due to the all-in-one nature of the unit. However, they can sometimes struggle to supply hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously if the demand is very high. Maintenance is crucial to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
