Yfirlið is an Icelandic term that translates to "fainting" or "loss of consciousness" in English. It refers to a temporary and sudden loss of consciousness, usually followed by a spontaneous recovery. This phenomenon occurs when there is a brief reduction in blood flow to the brain.

Several factors can lead to yfirlið. Common causes include vasovagal syncope, which is a reaction to pain, fear, or emotional distress. Orthostatic hypotension, a drop in blood pressure upon standing up, can also trigger it. Dehydration, low blood sugar, certain medications, and underlying heart conditions are other potential contributors.

The symptoms of yfirlið can vary. Before fainting, individuals may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, sweating, blurred vision, or a feeling of warmth. During the episode, the person will be unresponsive and may appear pale. Recovery is typically quick, with the person regaining consciousness within a minute or two.

If someone experiences yfirlið, it is important to lay them down with their legs elevated to help restore blood flow to the brain. Loosening any tight clothing is also recommended. If the episode is prolonged, recurrent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, medical attention should be sought to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
