A wordsul combines a base stem with fixed suls—suffix-like elements that encode tense, mood, aspect, and parts of speech, as well as shading such as certainty or negation. They aim to carry multiple meanings in one syllable.

Origin and use: The term originated in online discussions of constructed languages in the early 2020s and has since appeared in language guides and encyclopedias for worldbuilding. Wordsuls are not found in natural languages; they function as a design principle for invented tongues and for fictional analyses.

Structure: A typical wordsul has a stem plus a conventional sequence of sul affixes. Each sul contributes a discrete meaning, so a single wordsul can express tense, aspect, evidentiality, mood, and syntactic category together, depending on the language's rules.

Examples: In a hypothetical language, the stem ver- means "to know." The sul -ta marks past tense and -ri marks epistemic certainty. ver-ta-ri would mean "knew for sure." A second stem kal- meaning "to move" could take -nu for future and -ya for directive mood, yielding kal-nu-ya, "you will move (instructively)."
