A wool carder may refer to a person who cards wool, or to a tool used for carding wool. Carding is a preparatory step in fiber processing that aligns short fibers, blends fibers, and removes some impurities, producing a smooth batt or roving for spinning.

Hand carders consist of two paddles with intermeshing rows of wire teeth. The user works fibers between the paddles, repeatedly opening, separating, and aligning the fibers to create a more uniform strand. This method is common among hobby spinners and small fiber producers.

Mechanized or drum carders use rotating cylinders covered with carding cloth. These machines process larger quantities and produce a uniform web called a cake or batt, which can be drawn into rovings for spinning. Carded wool can retain a touch of texture due to remaining short fibers, depending on the fiber and settings.

The processing sequence typically begins with cleaning and scouring the fleece to remove dirt and lanolin, followed by drying and sorting. The fiber is then opened and teased before carding. The result is carded wool that can be formed into batts or slivers for spinning, felting, or blending with other fibers.

Historically, carding evolved from manual devices to increasingly mechanized systems during the industrial era. Today, both hobby and professional spinners use hand carders for small batches or drum carders for larger runs, choosing equipment based on scale, desired texture, and fiber type.
