Withinentity is a term used in information modeling and knowledge representation to denote a containment relationship in which a component is considered to reside within the boundaries of a larger, defined entity. It is a binary relation typically asserted between a container (the entity) and a member (the part). The notion serves to express that the member exists as part of or under the scope of the outer entity, rather than merely being colocated or associated.

In practice, withinentity may appear as a defined property in a data schema, ontology, or data exchange format. In RDF or OWL, a withinEntity property can link a member resource to its parent entity; in JSON-based schemas, a nested object or an explicit parent reference may encode the same idea. The concept is related to, but distinct from, hasPart, contains, and inside; each relation emphasizes different aspects of structure and semantics.

Considerations: Because the term is not universally standardized, its exact semantics can vary between domains. Clear documentation should specify domain and range, whether the relationship denotes strict compositional containment, and how it interacts with other relations such as partOf, locatedIn, or within.
