A wheeze is a high-pitched whistling sound made while breathing. It is typically heard during exhalation, but can also occur during inhalation. Wheezing is often associated with a narrowing or obstruction of the airways, such as the bronchi or bronchioles in the lungs.

Several conditions can cause wheezing. Asthma is a common cause, characterized by inflammation and tightening of the airways. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, can also lead to wheezing due to long-term damage to the lungs. Bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the small airways, is a frequent cause of wheezing in infants and young children. Other causes can include pneumonia, allergies, lung infections, and the inhalation of foreign objects.

The sound of a wheeze can vary in intensity and pitch depending on the severity of the airway narrowing. In some cases, wheezing may only be audible with a stethoscope, while in others it can be heard clearly without one. Treatment for wheezing depends on the underlying cause and may involve medications to open the airways, reduce inflammation, or treat infections. If wheezing is severe or accompanied by difficulty breathing, it requires immediate medical attention.
