Well drilling is the process of creating a hole in the ground to access underground sources of water, oil, natural gas, or other resources. The depth of the hole can vary significantly depending on the target resource and geological conditions. Water wells are typically drilled to tap into aquifers, which are underground layers of permeable rock or sediment that hold water. Oil and gas wells are drilled to extract hydrocarbons from reservoirs deep within the earth's crust.

Various methods are employed for well drilling, with rotary drilling being one of the most common. This technique involves rotating a drill bit at the end of a string of pipes, which grinds away rock and soil. Drilling fluid, often a mixture of water, clay, and additives, is circulated down the drill string to cool the bit, lubricate the hole, and bring cuttings to the surface. Percussion drilling, another method, uses a heavy bit that is repeatedly dropped to break up rock.

Once a well is drilled to the desired depth, it is typically lined with casing, a metal pipe, to prevent the walls of the hole from collapsing and to isolate different geological formations. After casing is installed, screens or perforations are often placed in the casing at the level of the water-bearing aquifer to allow water to enter the well. For oil and gas wells, a more complex process of completion involving cementing and tubing installation is undertaken to ensure safe and efficient extraction. The drilling process requires specialized equipment and skilled personnel.
