Waterafval refers to the rejected or unfiltered wastewater that emerges from various stages in the treatment process of surface water or seawater, often remaining untreated or partially treated before being released into the environment.

In many areas, the received surface water undergoes some form of treatment before being utilized for drinking, industrial purposes, or recreation, including municipal supply. However, a portion of surface water typically carries dissolved solids, substances, or other contaminants. If these elements are not properly removed through treatment or settlement processes, they are classified as waterafval.

Before sufficient waste treatment infrastructure existed, unfiltered and untreated wastewater was dumped into rivers, streams and lakes or just discharged over land, often causing pollution. Often existing power equipment was used to repel or burrow through solidified contaminants to supply the favourable usage of townships.

As urban areas continue to grow and pollution becomes an increasing concern, innovative strategies have been implemented to treat this water for reuse or in some regions more permissive with marginal retention in water bodies.
