Warmtewaarde, in Dutch often translated as calorific value, is a measure of the amount of heat released when a material, typically a fuel, is completely burned. It is usually expressed in units such as megajoules per kilogram (MJ/kg) or megajoules per cubic meter (MJ/m3), and can also be stated in kilowatt-hours per unit. There are two commonly used definitions: gross calorific value (GCV) and net calorific value (LHV). GCV includes the latent heat of vaporization of water produced during combustion, while LHV excludes this latent heat. The choice between GCV and LHV affects energy calculations and efficiency assessments; LHV is often used for systems where water remains in vapor form, whereas GCV is used when condensable energy can be captured.
