Võimsuseühik refers to a unit of power in the International System of Units (SI). The primary SI unit of power is the watt (W). One watt is defined as one joule of energy per second, or 1 J/s. This means that if an object is performing work at a rate of one joule every second, its power is one watt.

The watt is named after the Scottish inventor and engineer James Watt, who made significant improvements to the steam engine. The concept of power is crucial in many fields of physics and engineering, including mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism. It quantifies the rate at which energy is transferred or converted.

Other units of power exist, though they are not part of the SI system. For example, the horsepower (hp) is a non-SI unit of power that was historically used to compare the output of steam engines with that of horses. One mechanical horsepower is approximately equal to 746 watts. In electrical contexts, watts are used to measure the rate of electrical energy consumption or production. For instance, a light bulb might be rated at 60 watts, indicating the rate at which it converts electrical energy into light and heat. Larger units, such as kilowatts (kW), megawatts (MW), and gigawatts (GW), are used for higher power ratings, commonly seen in power generation and industrial applications.
