Vízcserék, also known as water changes, refer to the process of partially or completely replacing the water in an aquarium to maintain water quality and ensure a healthy environment for aquatic life. This practice is fundamental in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums, as it helps manage the buildup of harmful substances such as ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, which are byproducts of fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying organic matter.

Regular water changes are essential for preventing toxic buildup, which can stress fish and other inhabitants, weaken their immune systems, and lead to diseases or even death. The frequency and volume of water changes depend on factors such as the size of the aquarium, the number and type of fish, stocking density, filtration system efficiency, and the presence of live plants. In general, a common guideline is to replace 10–30% of the aquarium water weekly or biweekly, though this can vary based on specific conditions.

Before performing a water change, it is important to prepare the replacement water to match the temperature, pH, and other chemical parameters of the existing water in the tank. Using a water conditioner can help neutralize chlorine and chloramine, which are commonly found in tap water and can be harmful to aquatic life. Additionally, dechlorinating the water ensures that any added minerals or supplements are effective.

Proper technique involves using a siphon or gravel vacuum to remove waste and debris from the substrate while simultaneously draining old water. This process also helps aerate the tank and stimulate beneficial bacteria in the filter media. While water changes are a routine maintenance task, they should be done carefully to avoid disrupting the established biological balance in the aquarium. Over time, consistent water changes contribute to a stable and thriving aquatic ecosystem.
