Vírusrészecskék, also known as virions, are the complete, infectious form of a virus outside of a host cell. They are not living organisms in the traditional sense, as they lack the cellular machinery to reproduce independently. Instead, they are essentially genetic material enclosed within a protective protein coat.

The genetic material can be either DNA or RNA, and it can exist as a single strand or a double strand. This genetic core contains the instructions for the virus to replicate once it enters a suitable host cell. Surrounding the genetic material is a protein shell called a capsid. The capsid's structure varies greatly between different types of viruses and plays a crucial role in protecting the viral genome and facilitating its entry into host cells.

Some viruses also possess an outer lipid envelope derived from the host cell membrane. This envelope can contain viral proteins that aid in attachment to new host cells. The size of virus particles is typically very small, ranging from 20 to 300 nanometers, making them invisible to the naked eye and requiring electron microscopes for visualization.

The primary function of a vírusrészecske is to deliver its genetic material into a host cell. Once inside, it hijacks the host cell's cellular machinery to produce more viral components, which then assemble into new virions. These new particles are released from the cell, often destroying it in the process, to infect other cells and perpetuate the viral life cycle.
