For example, if a rock sample has a pore volume of 100 cubic centimeters and 70 cubic centimeters are filled with water, the water saturation is 0.7 or 70%.

The concept is crucial for understanding how fluids are distributed within porous materials. In the context of oil and gas reservoirs, both oil saturation and water saturation are key parameters. High water saturation in a reservoir often indicates less hydrocarbon potential. Similarly, in soil science, soil moisture saturation refers to the percentage of pore space filled with water. When soil is fully saturated, no air remains in the pores, which can affect plant root respiration and nutrient movement.

Væskesaturasjon is calculated by dividing the volume of the fluid of interest by the total pore volume of the material. The pore volume itself is the total volume of voids within the porous medium. In many natural systems, multiple fluids coexist within the pore space, such as oil, water, and gas. Therefore, the sum of the saturations of all fluids present should equal 1 (or 100%). For instance, in a reservoir, the sum of oil, water, and gas saturations would theoretically add up to 1.
