Växthusverkan, or the greenhouse effect, is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. When the sun's energy reaches the Earth, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. These gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor, trap some of the outgoing heat, preventing it from escaping into space. This trapped heat keeps the planet warmer than it would otherwise be, making it habitable for life.

The intensity of the greenhouse effect is influenced by the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels for energy, deforestation, and industrial processes, have significantly increased the concentration of these gases. This increase leads to an enhanced greenhouse effect, where more heat is trapped, causing a rise in global average temperatures. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as global warming.

The consequences of an enhanced greenhouse effect are widespread and include changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels due to melting glaciers and thermal expansion of water, and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
