Vätgasteknik, or hydrogen technology, encompasses the methods and processes involved in the production, storage, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen. Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier with the potential to play a significant role in a decarbonized future. Its primary advantage is that when used in fuel cells, it produces only water as a byproduct, eliminating direct emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants.

The production of hydrogen can be achieved through various routes. Historically, steam methane reforming (SMR) of natural gas has been the dominant method, but this process releases carbon dioxide. More sustainable methods include electrolysis, where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. If the electricity used for electrolysis comes from renewable sources like solar or wind power, the resulting hydrogen is termed "green hydrogen," which is considered a key component of future energy systems. Other production methods include gasification of biomass or coal.

Storage and transportation of hydrogen present unique challenges due to its low density. Common methods include storing it as a compressed gas in high-pressure tanks or as a liquid at very low temperatures. Hydrogen can also be stored in solid-state materials through absorption or adsorption. Transportation typically involves pipelines, specialized trucks, or ships.

The applications of vätgasteknik are diverse. Hydrogen can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity for vehicles, buildings, and portable devices. It can also be used as a feedstock in industrial processes, such as ammonia production, and as a fuel for heating. The development of efficient and cost-effective vätgasteknik is crucial for enabling the widespread adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy solution.
