Värvusjõudu, also known as color force, is a hypothetical fundamental force in particle physics. It is proposed to mediate the interactions between quarks and gluons, the fundamental constituents of protons and neutrons. This force is responsible for binding quarks together to form these composite particles.

The concept of värvusjõudu arose from the observation that quarks appear to possess a property called "color charge." This color charge is analogous to electric charge in electromagnetism but has three types: red, green, and blue. Quarks can carry any of these color charges, and antiquarks carry antired, antigreen, or antiblue. The interactions between these color charges are mediated by gluons.

Gluons are the force-carrying particles of the värvusjõudu. Unlike photons, which mediate the electromagnetic force and are electrically neutral, gluons themselves carry color charge. This self-interaction of gluons is a key feature that distinguishes värvusjõudu from other fundamental forces and leads to unique phenomena such as color confinement.

Color confinement is the principle that quarks and gluons are never observed in isolation. They are always found bound together in color-neutral particles, such as protons and neutrons (baryons) or mesons. When quarks are pulled apart, the värvusjõudu between them increases, requiring more energy. Eventually, this energy is converted into new quark-antiquark pairs, which then form new color-neutral particles, rather than isolating a single quark.

The mathematical framework describing värvusjõudu is quantum chromodynamics (QCD). QCD successfully explains a wide range of experimental observations related to the strong nuclear force. While värvusjõudu is the dominant force within atomic nuclei, its effects are largely confined to subatomic scales.
