Värisokeita refers to individuals with color vision deficiency, commonly known as color blindness. This condition affects a person's ability to distinguish between certain colors. It is typically hereditary and far more common in males than females. The most prevalent form is red-green color blindness, where distinguishing between red and green is difficult. Other forms include blue-yellow color blindness and, very rarely, complete color blindness (achromatopsia) where an individual sees the world in shades of gray.

The cause of color blindness lies in the cone cells in the retina, which are responsible for color perception. Specific types of cone cells are either missing or not functioning correctly, leading to the inability to perceive certain wavelengths of light. This deficiency is usually congenital, meaning it is present from birth, but can also be acquired later in life due to certain diseases, medications, or aging.

While color blindness does not typically affect vision acuity, it can present challenges in everyday life. Tasks such as distinguishing traffic lights, choosing compatible clothing, or interpreting color-coded information can be difficult. However, most people with color blindness adapt well and develop strategies to navigate these challenges. Specialized glasses and apps can sometimes assist in distinguishing colors, but there is no cure for the congenital form of color blindness. Diagnosis is usually made through simple eye tests, like the Ishihara color test.
