Värimielikuvan, a Finnish term, translates to "color image" or "color impression." It refers to the subjective perception of color by an individual. This perception is influenced by a complex interplay of factors including the physical properties of light, the characteristics of the object reflecting or emitting light, and the physiological and psychological makeup of the observer.

The physical aspect involves the wavelength composition of light that reaches the eye. Different wavelengths correspond to different colors. Objects absorb and reflect specific wavelengths, which determines the color we see. For instance, a red apple appears red because it absorbs most wavelengths of visible light and reflects predominantly red wavelengths.

The physiological aspect relates to the structure and function of the human eye, particularly the cone cells in the retina responsible for color vision. There are three types of cones, sensitive to different ranges of wavelengths (roughly blue, green, and red). The brain interprets signals from these cones to create the sensation of color. Variations in cone sensitivity or number can lead to color vision deficiencies.

Psychological factors are also crucial. Our past experiences, cultural background, and even emotional state can influence how we perceive and interpret colors. Lighting conditions also play a significant role; the same object can appear different under daylight, incandescent light, or fluorescent light, a phenomenon known as metamerism. Therefore, a värimielikuvan is not an absolute, objective quality but a dynamic, personal experience.
