Värifotografia, often shortened to värifoto, refers to the historical term for color photography. This practice encompassed the various methods and techniques developed to capture and reproduce images in their natural colors. Early attempts at color photography were complex and experimental, often requiring multiple exposures or specialized chemical processes. Significant breakthroughs included the Autochrome Lumière process, introduced in 1907, which was one of the first commercially successful color photographic processes. This method used dyed starch grains as filters to create a color image on a single photographic plate.
