Väriconstanssia refers to the phenomenon of color constancy, a characteristic of human color perception. It is the ability to perceive the color of an object as relatively constant, even when the illumination conditions change. For example, a red apple will appear red whether it is viewed under bright sunlight, incandescent light, or fluorescent light, even though the actual light wavelengths reflecting off the apple's surface vary significantly under these different illuminations.

This perceptual constancy is crucial for recognizing objects in our environment. Without it, the color of objects would appear to shift dramatically with every change in lighting, making the world a confusing and unstable place to navigate. The brain achieves color constancy through complex neural mechanisms that adjust for the overall spectral distribution of the incident light. It essentially "subtracts" the color cast of the illumination from the perceived color of the object.

Factors influencing color constancy include the surrounding colors, the observer's prior knowledge of the object's typical color, and the brain's interpretation of the three-dimensional scene. While highly effective, color constancy is not perfect.
