Vänsterkammardilation refers to the enlargement of the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber. This condition is a significant finding in cardiovascular medicine and can be caused by a variety of underlying issues.

Common causes of left ventricular dilation include long-standing hypertension (high blood pressure) and valvular heart disease, such as aortic stenosis or mitral regurgitation. In these conditions, the left ventricle must work harder to pump blood, leading to structural changes and eventual dilation over time. Ischemic heart disease, resulting from reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, can also lead to dilation, often as a consequence of a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Certain cardiomyopathies, or diseases of the heart muscle itself, can also manifest as left ventricular dilation.

The consequences of left ventricular dilation can be serious. As the ventricle enlarges, its ability to pump blood effectively can be compromised, leading to heart failure. This can result in symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs and ankles. Dilation can also increase the risk of arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, and blood clots.

Diagnosis typically involves medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart), electrocardiogram (ECG), and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause and managing symptoms. This may include medications to control blood pressure, improve heart function, and prevent blood clots, as well as lifestyle modifications. In some cases, surgical or interventional procedures might be necessary.
