Välittäjäainereseptori, known in English as neurotransmitter receptor, is a protein molecule found on the surface of a cell, typically a neuron, that binds to a specific neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals from one neuron to another across a synapse. When a neurotransmitter binds to its receptor, it causes a change in the receiving cell. This change can be excitatory, making the cell more likely to fire an electrical signal, or inhibitory, making it less likely to fire.

There are many different types of neurotransmitter receptors, each specific to a particular neurotransmitter. For example, acetylcholine receptors bind to acetylcholine, while dopamine receptors bind to dopamine.
