Välipalvelimet, often translated as proxy servers, act as intermediaries between a client and another server. When a client requests a resource from a server, the request is first sent to the proxy server. The proxy then forwards the request to the destination server on behalf of the client. The response from the destination server is sent back to the proxy, which then forwards it to the original client.

There are several reasons for using välipalvelimet. One common use is for enhanced security. Proxies can filter out malicious content and prevent direct access to internal networks, thus protecting clients from direct attacks. They can also be used to enforce internet usage policies within an organization, blocking access to certain websites.

Another significant application of välipalvelimet is for performance improvement. Caching is a key function here. Proxies can store copies of frequently accessed web pages or files. When another client requests the same resource, the proxy can serve it directly from its cache, which is much faster than fetching it from the origin server. This also reduces the load on the origin server and saves bandwidth.

By connecting to a proxy server located in a different region, users can access content that might be blocked in their own location. This is often utilized for streaming services or websites with regional content limitations. Different types of proxies exist, including forward proxies that serve clients and reverse proxies that serve servers, each with specific roles in network architecture.
