Välilevyyn refers to a slipped or herniated disc in Finnish. It occurs when the soft, gel-like center of an intervertebral disc pushes through a tear in the tougher outer layer. These discs act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae of the spine. A herniated disc can happen in any part of the spine, but it is most common in the lower back and neck.

The causes of a slipped disc can include age-related wear and tear, sudden strain from lifting heavy objects incorrectly, or trauma. Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity of the herniation and whether it presses on a nerve. Common symptoms include localized pain, which may be sharp or dull, and radiating pain that travels down an arm or leg (sciatica). Numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the affected limb are also possible.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans. Treatment options range from conservative approaches to surgical intervention. Conservative treatments often include rest, pain medication, physical therapy, and epidural steroid injections. Physical therapy aims to strengthen supporting muscles and improve posture. If conservative measures fail to provide relief or if there is significant nerve compression leading to severe weakness or loss of function, surgery may be considered to remove the herniated portion of the disc.
