Väijytystaktiikka, often translated as ambush tactics, is a military strategy where an attacking force conceals itself and lies in wait for an enemy force to pass by, before launching a surprise attack. The goal is to overwhelm the enemy with sudden, concentrated fire while they are at their most vulnerable. This tactic relies heavily on surprise, reconnaissance, and the terrain to provide cover for the attacking force.

The effectiveness of a väijytys depends on several factors. The attacking force must be able to remain undetected until the opportune moment, which often involves careful selection of the ambush site and disciplined movement and noise discipline. The ambush site is typically chosen to channel the enemy into a specific kill zone where they can be effectively engaged. This could be a narrow pass, a bend in a road, or an area with dense cover.

Upon initiation of the ambush, all elements of the attacking force strike simultaneously, maximizing shock and disruption to the enemy. Fire is usually concentrated on the leading and rear elements of the enemy formation to prevent them from maneuvering or escaping. The attackers aim to inflict maximum casualties and disrupt the enemy's command and control before they can mount an effective defense or retreat.

Väijytystaktiikka has been employed throughout military history in various forms. It is particularly effective against larger, slower-moving forces or those that are unaware of the enemy's presence. While successful ambushes can be decisive, they also carry risks, including the possibility of being discovered before the attack, or the enemy successfully repelling the ambush and counter-attacking.
