Väestötutkimusten, or population studies in English, are systematic investigations of the characteristics, behaviors, and health of specific groups of people. They can be descriptive, aiming to document the prevalence of certain conditions or characteristics, or analytical, seeking to establish relationships between exposures and outcomes.

There are several types of population studies. Cross-sectional studies capture a snapshot of a population at a single point in time, measuring prevalence of diseases and exposures simultaneously. Cohort studies follow a group of individuals over time to observe the development of diseases or health outcomes in relation to exposures. Case-control studies compare individuals with a specific outcome (cases) to individuals without it (controls) to identify potential risk factors. Intervention studies, such as randomized controlled trials, involve manipulating an exposure in a population to assess its effect on health outcomes.

Data for population studies is typically collected through surveys, interviews, medical examinations, and the analysis of existing health records. Rigorous research methodologies, including appropriate sampling techniques and statistical analysis, are crucial for ensuring the validity and reliability of findings.
