Válaszfelületmodellezés, often translated as Response Surface Methodology (RSM), is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques used for the modeling and analysis of problems in which a response of interest is influenced by several variables. The primary goal of RSM is to optimize the response variable by finding the best operating conditions. It is particularly useful when the relationship between the variables and the response is complex and cannot be easily described by linear models.

The process typically begins with a designed experiment to gather data. This data is then used to fit a mathematical model, often a second-order polynomial, that approximates the relationship between the independent variables and the response. Once the model is established, techniques such as graphical analysis (contour plots, surface plots) or optimization algorithms are employed to identify the settings of the variables that yield the desired response, whether it be maximization, minimization, or achieving a target value.

RSM is widely applied in various fields including chemical engineering, manufacturing, pharmaceutical development, and food science. It helps in understanding the significant factors affecting a process, identifying interactions between these factors, and determining the optimal conditions for efficiency, yield, or quality. The iterative nature of RSM allows for refinement of the model and optimization as more data is collected.
