Váladékképződés, commonly referred to as secretion, is a fundamental biological process by which cells produce and discharge substances. These substances, known as secretions or exudates, can serve a wide range of functions within an organism. They are typically synthesized within specialized cells or glands.

The process of secretion involves several stages, beginning with the synthesis of the secreted material, often within the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus of the cell. This material is then packaged into vesicles, which are small membrane-bound sacs. These vesicles then travel to the cell membrane, where they fuse with it, releasing their contents outside the cell or into a specific duct or cavity.

Secretions can be broadly categorized by their origin and destination. Exocrine secretions are released onto an epithelial surface, either directly or through a duct. Examples include sweat, saliva, mucus, and digestive enzymes. Endocrine secretions, on the other hand, are hormones that are released directly into the bloodstream to act on target cells elsewhere in the body. Other types of secretions include paracrine secretions, which act on nearby cells, and autocrine secretions, which act on the same cell that produced them.

The substances secreted vary greatly in their chemical composition and function. They can include proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, ions, and waste products. These secretions play crucial roles in lubrication, protection, digestion, communication (hormones), waste removal, and maintaining homeostasis within the body. Dysfunction in secretion can lead to various diseases and medical conditions.
