vokiei

Vokiei is a constructed language developed for speculative fiction and linguistic experimentation. It is presented as the native tongue of the fictional Vok people inhabiting the Vorek Isles, a chain of volcanic islets in a subtropical archipelago. In worldbuilding circles, Vokiei is used to explore how language shapes social identity, ritual practice, and intercultural contact within a compact, self-contained culture.

Phonology and script: Vokiei has a relatively small phoneme inventory, with voiceless stops p, t, k; fricatives s and h; a lateral l; and a nasal n. Vowel sounds are five short vowels a, e, i, o, u, with occasional vowel length distinctions in older texts. The language is written primarily in a syllabary of roughly sixty glyphs, with a Latin transliteration used for academic works.

Grammar: The language is agglutinative with a subject–object–verb base. Nouns inflect for case (nominative, genitive, dative), number, and definiteness. Verbs encode tense, aspect, mood, and evidentiality via suffix sequences. Adjectives follow the nouns they modify. Word order is generally SOV, though topicalization can alter the arrangement. Pronouns are clitic and attach to verbs or nouns.

Sociolinguistic notes: In the fictional setting, Vokiei is endangered by a lingua franca used in trade and education. Younger speakers may mix Vokiei with that lingua, leading to simplification of inflection.
