Vlamdetectors are flame-detection devices used to identify the presence of a flame or rapid ignition in a protected space, enabling rapid alarms and automatic safety actions. They are a component of process safety and fire protection systems in industrial, commercial, and critical facilities.

Most Vlamdetectors operate by sensing characteristic flame signatures with optical sensors. Common types include ultraviolet (UV) flame detectors, which respond quickly to hydrocarbon flames, infrared (IR) flame detectors, which detect heat and flame emission in the 3–5 micrometer band, and multi-spectral detectors that combine several wavelengths. Some devices use image-based flame detection through cameras and software to identify flame patterns.

They can be line-of-sight or open-path and are designed for harsh environments with dust, humidity, or bright daylight. Applications include oil and gas terminals, refineries, petrochemical plants, power generation, waste incineration, and large manufacturing facilities.

Advantages include fast response, reduced nuisance alarms compared with smoke detectors, and integration with automatic shutdown, suppression, or ventilation controls. Limitations include sensitivity to environmental conditions such as direct sunlight, solar glare, dust, fog, and radiant heat, potential decreased performance for certain flame types, and the need for regular maintenance and calibration to minimize false alarms.

History and standards: Flame-detection technology emerged in the mid-20th century and has evolved to incorporate multi-spectral and camera-based approaches. Sector-specific standards and certifications vary by region, with common frameworks aligned to fire and safety systems such as NFPA, EN, and IEC requirements.
