Vitrobefruktning, commonly known as in vitro fertilization or IVF, is a fertility treatment that involves fertilizing an egg outside the body. The process begins with ovarian stimulation, where a woman is given medications to encourage her ovaries to produce multiple eggs. These eggs are then retrieved through a minor surgical procedure.

Concurrently, sperm is collected from the male partner or a donor. The retrieved eggs and sperm are brought together in a laboratory dish, where fertilization can occur. This fertilization process can happen through conventional IVF, where sperm are placed in close proximity to the eggs, or through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.

After fertilization, the resulting embryos are cultured in the lab for a few days. During this time, they are monitored for growth and development. Once the embryos reach a suitable stage, one or more are transferred into the woman's uterus with the hope of achieving a pregnancy. Any remaining viable embryos may be cryopreserved for future use.
