virtsanjohdot
Virtsanjohdot, known scientifically as ureters, are a pair of muscular tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. These tubes originate at the renal pelvis in each kidney and descend through the abdominal cavity and pelvis. The walls of the ureters are composed of smooth muscle tissue that contracts rhythmically in a process called peristalsis. These contractions propel urine downwards towards the bladder, even against gravity.
Each ureter is approximately 25 to 30 centimeters long in adults and has a diameter that varies.
The primary function of the ureters is to transport urine, a waste product filtered by the kidneys,
