Virtamäärät is a general term used in Finnish technical language to denote quantities that describe the amount of something moving through a cross-section per unit time. The concept is used across disciplines to express the rate of transfer or flow and can refer to different physical phenomena depending on context.

In electrical engineering, virtamäärä refers to electrical current, I, the rate at which electric charge passes a point per unit time. The unit is the ampere, and current can be direct (DC) or alternating (AC). In this context, the focus is on magnitude and direction of charge flow.

In fluid mechanics, virtamäärä describes flow rate. Volumetric flow rate, Q, is the volume of fluid passing per unit time, with units such as cubic meters per second (m^3/s) or liters per second (L/s). Mass flow rate, m_dot, is the mass of fluid moving per unit time, with units kg/s. The two are related by density: m_dot = rho * Q. Flow rate is a central quantity in pipe networks, process engineering, and HVAC systems.
