Virtaimuuntajat, often translated as "flow transformers" or "current transformers" in English, are crucial components in electrical systems. They are a type of instrument transformer used to measure or protect electrical circuits carrying high alternating currents. Essentially, a virtaimuuntaja steps down a high current to a lower, standardized current that can be safely handled by measuring instruments like ammeters or protective relays.

The principle of operation relies on electromagnetic induction. A virtaimuuntaja consists of a primary winding, which is connected in series with the high-current circuit being monitored, and a secondary winding, which is connected to the measuring device. The primary winding typically has very few turns, while the secondary winding has many more. When alternating current flows through the primary winding, it creates a changing magnetic flux in the core. This changing flux, in turn, induces a current in the secondary winding that is proportional to the primary current but at a much lower magnitude.
