Virstanpylväät (sing. virstanpylväs) are historical milestone posts along Finnish roads that marked distances in verstas, an old Russian unit roughly equal to 1.067 kilometers. They were erected mainly on important routes during the 19th century when Finland was part of the Russian Empire, and served travelers, postal services, and regional administration by indicating how far remained to key towns or borders.

Construction and design varied: posts were commonly made of stone, wood, or metal, and inscriptions showed the distance in verstas and often carried initials, dates, or imperial symbols. Inscriptions appeared in Finnish, Swedish, and Russian depending on location and period. The markings typically pointed to a reference town such as Helsinki or Turku, or to the next major junction, but exact references differed between routes.

With the modernization of roads and the adoption of metric measurements, many virstanpylväät fell into disuse, were removed, or repurposed. Nevertheless, a number have survived and are regarded as cultural heritage. They are documented by national and local authorities and preserved in museums or protected as monuments in several municipalities.

Today virstanpylväät are studied for historical geography and transport history. They illustrate how distances were communicated on pre-automobile networks and reflect the administrative ties of the era. Some examples form part of outdoor heritage routes or are presented at local museums, underscoring their value as remnants of a bygone transport landscape.
