Vipumekanismit is the Finnish term for lever-based mechanisms in engineering and design. They are devices that transmit and transform force using a rigid bar that rotates around a pivot, or fulcrum. By arranging the fulcrum and the positions of input force and load, vipumekanismit can change the magnitude and direction of forces, creating mechanical advantage or disadvantage as needed.

The basic principle is torque balance: the product of force and its distance from the fulcrum on one side of the pivot equals the corresponding product on the other side, in ideal conditions.
