Vindeyðing refers to the process of a plant shedding its leaves. This is a natural phenomenon observed in deciduous plants, primarily in temperate climates. The shedding of leaves typically occurs in autumn or during dry seasons, serving as a survival mechanism for the plant.

During the colder months or periods of drought, water is scarce and the ground may freeze. Leaves, with their large surface area, lose water through transpiration. By shedding their leaves, plants significantly reduce water loss, preventing dehydration. Additionally, leaves can be damaged by frost and heavy snow. Removing them before these harsh conditions arrive helps to prevent physical damage to the branches and the plant's overall structure.

The process of vindeyðing involves several physiological changes within the plant. As days shorten and temperatures drop, hormonal changes occur. A layer of cells called the abscission layer forms at the base of the leaf stalk. This layer gradually weakens the connection between the leaf and the stem, eventually causing the leaf to detach. Chlorophyll, the pigment that gives leaves their green color, breaks down, revealing other pigments such as yellow and orange carotenoids, and sometimes red anthocyanins, leading to the characteristic fall colors.

Once the leaves have fallen, the plant enters a dormant state, conserving energy and resources until favorable conditions return in the spring. This adaptation allows deciduous plants to thrive in environments with distinct seasonal changes.
