Viivastointilinja, also known as a barline, is a vertical line or set of lines drawn through the staff in musical notation. Its primary function is to divide music into measures or bars. These divisions help organize the musical flow, making it easier to read and perform.

There are different types of bar lines. The most common is the single bar line, which separates regular measures. A double bar line, consisting of two thin vertical lines, typically indicates the end of a section or a significant change in the music. A thick bar line, often paired with a thin one, signifies the end of the entire piece. Repeat signs, which are double bar lines with dots, indicate that a section of music should be played again.

The placement of bar lines is determined by the time signature of the music. The time signature indicates how many beats are in each measure and what note value receives one beat. Musicians count the beats within each measure and play accordingly, pausing or changing emphasis at the bar line. This rhythmic organization is crucial for ensemble playing and for maintaining a consistent tempo. Without bar lines, the rhythmic structure of music would be much harder to follow.
