Viirusümbriseks, often translated as "viral envelope," refers to a lipid bilayer that surrounds the genetic material of some viruses. This envelope is derived from the host cell membrane during the process of viral budding or release. It is not a static structure but is dynamic and contains viral proteins embedded within it, which are crucial for the virus's life cycle.

The viral envelope plays a vital role in viral infectivity. Proteins on the surface of the envelope, known as glycoproteins or viral spike proteins, are responsible for attaching to specific receptors on the surface of host cells. This attachment is the first step in the viral entry process, allowing the virus to penetrate the cell and initiate replication. Once inside the cell, the virus hijacks the host's machinery to produce new viral particles.

The presence or absence of a viral envelope is a key characteristic used in classifying viruses. Enveloped viruses, such as influenza virus, HIV, and coronaviruses, tend to be more susceptible to environmental factors like heat, detergents, and disinfectants, which can disrupt the lipid bilayer. Non-enveloped viruses, on the other hand, generally possess greater stability in the environment. The envelope's composition and the specific proteins it carries are often targets for antiviral drugs and vaccines, as they are essential for viral entry and replication.
