Viemäröintijärjestelmällä, or sewerage system, refers to the network of underground pipes, pumps, and manholes that collects and transports wastewater from buildings and other sources to a treatment facility or a safe discharge point. This system is crucial for public health and environmental protection by preventing the spread of diseases and minimizing pollution of water bodies.

The process typically begins at the source, where wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, and industrial processes enters the building's internal plumbing. From there, it flows into the municipal sewer lines, which are usually gravity-fed but may incorporate pumping stations to move water over uphill sections or to greater distances. The collected wastewater is then conveyed to a wastewater treatment plant.

At the treatment plant, the wastewater undergoes a series of physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove solids, organic matter, nutrients, and harmful microorganisms. The treated effluent is then discharged into rivers, lakes, or the sea, meeting strict environmental standards. Sludge, the solid residue from treatment, is often further processed and disposed of or utilized for beneficial purposes, such as fertilizer.

Regular inspections, cleaning, and repairs are necessary to ensure the system's efficient operation and longevity.
