Videolüliti, also known as video interlacing, is a technique used in video display to create the illusion of motion by combining a series of individual still images, or frames. In interlaced video, each frame is divided into two fields: an odd field, which contains the odd-numbered lines, and an even field, which contains the even-numbered lines. These fields are displayed sequentially, resulting in a frame rate that is twice the field rate.

The primary advantage of interlacing is that it reduces the amount of data that needs to be transmitted or stored, as each frame contains half the number of lines of a progressive scan image. This makes interlacing particularly useful for broadcast television, where bandwidth is a limited resource.

However, interlacing also has several drawbacks. One of the most notable is interline twitter, also known as interlace flicker or field flicker, which occurs when there is a significant difference between the odd and even fields of a frame. This can result in a visible flickering effect, especially in scenes with horizontal detail. Additionally, interlacing can cause motion blur, as objects in motion may be displayed as a blur rather than sharp images.

Despite these issues, interlacing remains in use today, particularly in broadcast television. However, it has largely been replaced by progressive scan in digital video formats, as it provides a more stable and clear image. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in interlacing, particularly in the context of high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut (WCG) video, as it can help to reduce bandwidth requirements while maintaining image quality.
