Vesiviljelymenetelmä, often translated as hydroponics, is a method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. In this system, plant roots are supported by inert media such as perlite, rockwool, or expanded clay pellets, or they can be suspended directly in the nutrient solution. The nutrient solution provides all the essential elements for plant growth, delivered directly to the roots.

There are various types of hydroponic systems, each with its own approach to delivering nutrients and supporting the plants. These include Deep Water Culture (DWC), where plant roots are submerged in a nutrient-rich water reservoir; Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), where a thin film of nutrient solution flows over the roots; and Drip Systems, where nutrient solution is periodically delivered to the base of each plant. Ebb and Flow (or Flood and Drain) systems periodically flood the growing medium with nutrient solution and then allow it to drain away. Aeroponics is another form, where roots are suspended in the air and misted with nutrient solution.

Hydroponic systems can be used for a wide range of crops, including leafy greens, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries. This method offers several advantages, such as faster growth rates, higher yields, and reduced water usage compared to traditional soil-based agriculture. It also allows for cultivation in areas with poor soil quality or limited space. However, hydroponics requires careful management of nutrient solutions, pH levels, and environmental conditions to ensure optimal plant health and productivity.
