Verziókövetése, commonly translated as version control, is a system that records changes to a file or set of files over time so that you can recall specific versions later. This allows you to revert files back to a previous state, compare changes between versions, and track who made what changes and when. It is an essential tool in software development, but also useful for managing any kind of document or project where history and collaboration are important.

The core idea behind version control is the repository, which stores the history of your project. When you work on a project, you create a working copy. You then make changes and "commit" these changes to the repository. Each commit is a snapshot of your project at a particular point in time, and it is associated with a unique identifier and a commit message describing the changes.

Distributed version control systems (DVCS) like Git are widely used today. In a DVCS, each developer has a full copy of the repository, including its entire history. This allows for offline work and provides a robust backup mechanism. Branching is another key feature, enabling developers to work on new features or bug fixes in isolation without affecting the main codebase. Once the work is complete, changes can be merged back into the main line. This structured approach to managing changes greatly improves collaboration and project stability.
