Verkkokäynnistys, also known as network booting or PXE booting (Preboot Execution Environment), is a method of booting a computer over a network. Instead of relying on a local storage device like a hard drive or CD-ROM, a verkkokäynnistys-enabled computer receives its operating system and boot instructions from a server on the network.

This process typically involves a network interface card (NIC) on the client computer that supports PXE. When the computer powers on, the PXE firmware on the NIC initializes and sends a broadcast request across the network to locate a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. The DHCP server, in turn, provides the client with an IP address and the address of a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server. The client then uses TFTP to download a boot loader, which can then load the operating system kernel and other necessary files from the network.

Verkkokäynnistys offers several advantages, particularly in enterprise environments. It simplifies operating system deployment and updates, as administrators can manage a single master image on the server rather than installing it on each individual machine. It also allows for diskless workstations, which can reduce hardware costs and improve security, as sensitive data is not stored locally. Furthermore, it facilitates easier recovery and maintenance, as systems can be quickly re-imaged or booted into diagnostic environments remotely. While primarily used for initial OS installation, verkkokäynnistys can also be used to boot into live environments or specialized operating systems without modifying local storage.
