The concept applies to various sectors, including residential rental properties, commercial leases, and short-term or vacation rentals. In practice, verhuurdagen are tracked per unit and can be aggregated for an entire building or portfolio. The metric is closely related to occupancy rate and vacancy days, with occupancy rate calculated as verhuurdagen divided by the total possible days (times the number of units) in the period.

Calculation and interpretation: for a single unit over a 365-day period, each day the unit is rented counts as one verhuurdag. If a unit is leased or occupied on certain days, those days are added up. For multiple units, verhuurdagen can be summed across units or reported per unit. Example: a 10-unit building with a total of 3,000 verhuurdagen in a year corresponds to an occupancy rate of about 82% when compared to 3,650 possible unit-days (10 units × 365 days).
