Verdensbanken, officially the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA), is an international financial institution that provides loans and grants to governments of low-income and middle-income countries for the purpose of pursuing capital projects. It is a member of the World Bank Group. The IBRD was established in 1944 to help finance the reconstruction of European nations after World War II. The IDA was established in 1960 to provide more flexible and concessional financing to the poorest countries.

The World Bank's stated mission is to reduce poverty by providing financial and technical assistance to developing countries. It works in areas such as education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and governance. The bank's operations are funded by contributions from its member countries, as well as by borrowing on international capital markets. Decisions within the World Bank are made by a board of governors, which is comprised of representatives from each member country. Voting power is generally based on a country's financial contribution to the bank. The World Bank is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and has offices in over 130 locations worldwide. It is one of the largest sources of development assistance in the world.
